With a heavy focus on the love and joy that comes with motherhood and unrealistic societal expectations, many women are terrified to admit their pregnancy or postpartum journey is anything but joyful. It’s actually one of the most jarring and grueling experiences a woman will have to endure in life.

Peripartum depression is when a woman experiences the symptoms of depression during and/or after pregnancy.

Here are some of the immense changes women go through after childbirth:

  • Hormone fluctuations impacting mood

  • A significant increase in anxiety and irritability

  • Pain and discomfort as she recovers

  • Breastfeeding stress or difficulties

  • Sleep deprivation, exhaustion, overwhelm

  • A disruption of normalcy and routine

  • Shifts in marriage and feeling disconnected

  • A lack of understanding or support from others

Postpartum depression and anxiety are treatable with the help of a skilled mental health professional

Therapy approaches:

person-centered - dialectical behavioral therapy (dbt) - strength-based - mindfulness - acceptance commitment therapy (act)- cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
